Transportation

Chapel Hill Transit operates more than twenty routes throughout Chapel Hill, serving areas including the UNC campus and downtown. Some routes also run on weekends. Chapel Hill Transit is a fare-free public transportation system, making it easy and accessible for everyone to get around town. Arrival times may vary due to road conditions. Riders are advised to arrive early and ensure they have an alternative commuting option in case of significant bus delays.

  • B Route: The bus operates on and around campus, including service to Baity Hill. Frequency: Every 30 minutes, Monday to Friday
  • U Route: The bus provides service to locations on and around the campus. Frequency: Every 15 minutes, weekdays and weekends.
  • RU Route: The bus provides service to locations on and around the campus. Frequency: Every 15 minutes, Monday to Friday

P2P or Point-to-Point

What is Point-to-Point (P2P)? Point-to-Point (P2P) is a University-operated service providing on-demand and fixed route options to assist in getting around campus both after dark and during normal working hours. Bus rides are free for students. 

  • Late Night P2P Baity Hill Shuttle. The bus operates in and around campus locations, including Baity Hill. Every 30 minutes, 7pm to 3 am, Monday to Saturday.

    * There isn’t a dedicated app to track the P2P service, and the tracking map might not always show real-time updates. So, it’s a good idea to get to the bus stop a little early, just to be safe!

Go Triangle

Go Triangle operates regional bus services connecting Chapel Hill, Durham, Cary, and surrounding areas. UNC-Chapel Hill students are eligible to apply for the GoPass Partner Program, which allows registered students to ride GoTriangle buses for free. To access the GoPass Partner benefit, you should download the Umo app and scan the QR code when boarding the bus. GoTriangle buses are not free. DMV

North Carolina State ID is the best ID to have on you when going out at night or to purchase alcohol. You do not want to cary your passport around and getting a driver’s license is not necessary. In order to receive the State ID you must have arrived in the US and your SEVIS record must be updated with the arrival date. This takes place after orientation and will be done by the ISSS. Once that is confirmed, schedule an appointment (very difficult) or go in person as a walk-in. https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/identification/Pages/default.aspx

According to the DMV website there is no fee for anyone older than 16. The closest DMV office is in Carrboro Plaza.
