  • Casual: T-shirts, jeans, casual dresses, light jackets
  • Party Clothes: Think fun dresses, stylish shirts—whatever makes you feel confident!
  • Traditional Wear: For cultural events or if you just want to feel at home

  • Shoes: Formal (black/brown), casual sneakers, comfy sandals/slippers, a pair of heels (for ladies) Facial masks (it’s quite expensive in the US)

Notes: When you first arrive here (late Jul/ Aug), it’ll be warm—around 30°C. Prioritize summer clothes for now. You can shop for winter gear later at outlets or online.
Colors like Carolina blue, navy, white, and black are popular for many occasions—it’s worth having a few shirts/ dresses in these shades. (Duke blue or State red are off limits :))
Don’t overpack. Just bring your go-to, high-quality favorites. You’ll find affordable casual options in the US.

Personal Items

  • Specs/ Contact Lenses: If you’re wearing specs, bring 1–2 backup pairs. Getting new ones in the U.S. can be expensive and requires a doctor’s prescription
  • Sunglasses: Useful year-round! Toiletries: Bring enough for the first few days—basic soap, toothbrush, etc. You’ll find the rest easily once you’re here
  • Umbrella: It might rain in early August. If you’ve got space, toss one in. Or just grab one at a grocery store or wait for a freebie at orientation
  • Medicines: Bring any personal medications you need, especially if you have allergies (e.g., to pollen). Also handy: paracetamol (acetaminophen), pain relievers, basic antibiotics, and a few band-aids.
